📍 Location in Audio Script: "We're looking for **waiters** at the moment. There was one post for a cook, but that's already been taken."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The question asks for the current vacancies. The speaker explicitly states they are looking for "**waiters**." The post for a cook is mentioned as a distractor, as it has already been filled.

⚠️ Potential Traps: The word "**cook**" is mentioned but is no longer available.

Key Learning Point: When multiple possibilities are discussed, listen for the item that is **currently needed** or available.

📝 Question 2: Can choose your 2 ....... (must be the same each week)

🔹 Correct Answer: day off

📍 Location in Audio Script: "You get one **day off** and I think you can negotiate which one you want, it's more or less up to you. But it has to be the same one every week."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The question asks what the employee can choose/negotiate. The speaker states they can negotiate their **day off**, which must be consistent each week.

⚠️ Potential Traps: The **shifts** (day shift/late shift) are mentioned, but the speaker says they alternate them, meaning the employee cannot choose their shift.

Key Learning Point: Distinguish between conditions that are **fixed** (shifts) and conditions that are **negotiable** (day off).

📝 Question 3: Pay: £5.50 per hour including a 3 .......

🔹 Correct Answer: break

📍 Location in Audio Script: "You get £5.50 an hour, and that includes a **break**."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The question asks what is included in the hourly rate. The speaker states the pay "includes a **break**."

⚠️ Potential Traps: The pay rate "**£5.50**" is given but is not the answer. The word **tips** is mentioned as an extra to the pay, not included in the £5.50 rate itself.

Key Learning Point: The answer immediately follows the key phrase "**includes a**."

📝 Question 4: A 4 ....... is provided in the hotel

🔹 Correct Answer: (free) meal

📍 Location in Audio Script: "You can get a **meal** in the hotel if you want to, and there's no charge for it so you might as well."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The question asks what is provided in the hotel. The speaker states the employee can get a **meal** (which is free).

⚠️ Potential Traps: The candidate might try to use "**no charge**" or "**home**" (where they don't have to eat), which is not the **item provided**.

Key Learning Point: Look for the **noun** that represents the item being offered or supplied.

📝 Question 5: Dress: a white shirt and 5 ....... trousers (not supplied), a 6 ....... (supplied)

🔹 Correct Answer: dark (coloured)

📍 Location in Audio Script: "You need to wear a white shirt, just a plain one, and **dark trousers**. You know, not green or anything like that."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The required adjective for the trousers is "**dark**" (or dark coloured).

⚠️ Potential Traps: The word "**green**" is mentioned as an example of what they shouldn't wear. The word "**white**" is for the shirt, not the trousers.

Key Learning Point: Listen for the **adjective** describing the specific piece of clothing, and note that color is often the requirement.

📝 Question 6: Dress: a white shirt and 5 ....... trousers (not supplied), a 6 ....... (supplied)

🔹 Correct Answer: jacket

📍 Location in Audio Script: "You have to wear a **jacket**, but the hotel lends you that [supplied]."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The question asks for the **supplied item** of clothing. The speaker confirms the hotel lends a "**jacket**."

⚠️ Potential Traps: The word "**waistcoat**" is mentioned but is quickly dismissed/not required. The shirt and trousers are **not supplied**.

Key Learning Point: Use the parenthetical note (**supplied**) to distinguish this item from the others that are not supplied.

📝 Question 7: Starting date: 7 .......

🔹 Correct Answer: 28 June

📍 Location in Audio Script: "Yes, the **28th**, in time for the summer."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The speaker confirms the starting date is the "**28th**," which the context confirms is **June**. (The man said he's available from the 10th of June, and the agent confirms the 28th.)

⚠️ Potential Traps: The man mentions he is available from the "**10th**" (which is too early) and the speaker mentions the "**end of June**" (too vague). The exact date is required.

Key Learning Point: Capture the **specific day and month** when a date is requested.

📝 Question 8: Call Jane 8 ....... (service manage) before 9 ....... tomorrow (Tel: 832009)

🔹 Correct Answer: Urwin

📍 Location in Audio Script: "Her name's Jane **Urwin**, that's U-R-W-I-N, and she'll probably arrange to meet you."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The question asks for Jane's surname, which the speaker spells out: "**Urwin**."

⚠️ Potential Traps: The first name "**Jane**" is already provided. The candidate must ensure the **spelling** is correct.

Key Learning Point: Be ready to write down the **spelling of a surname** immediately after it's introduced and confirmed.

📝 Question 9: Call Jane 8 ....... (service manage) before 9 ....... tomorrow (Tel: 832009)

🔹 Correct Answer: 12.00 (pm)/noon/midday

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The best time to call is before **midday** (**12.00 pm/noon**). The question is asking for the **time limit**.

⚠️ Potential Traps: The first number mentioned in the phone number (**832**) is a numerical distractor.

Key Learning Point: Time limits are often given using common terms like **midday or noon**, which should be written as numbers (**12.00 pm**) or words.

📝 Question 10: She will require a 10 .......

🔹 Correct Answer: reference

📍 Location in Audio Script: "And by the way, she will ask you for a **reference**, so you might like to be thinking about that. You know, just someone who knows you and can vouch for you."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The final requirement mentioned is a "**reference**."

⚠️ Potential Traps: The description of a reference ("someone who knows you and can vouch for you") is context, not the answer.

Key Learning Point: Final notes often summarize a **key requirement for employment**.

**MAN:** It’s a job working a system of alternate shifts. So one week you’d be working the day shift, and the next week the late shift. 📍Q2 You get one **day off** and I think you can negotiate which one you want, it's more or less up to you. You’ll be paid every week, and of course there are tips. 📍Q4 You can get a **meal** in the hotel if you want to, and there's no charge for it so you might as well. Now, about what you have to wear. 📍Q5 You need to wear a white shirt, just a plain one, and **dark trousers**. You know, not green or anything like that. 📍Q6 You have to wear a **jacket**, but the hotel lends you that [supplied]. We did used to insist on a waistcoat, but we’ve dropped that now.

**MAN:** Right. And when would the job start?

**AGENT:** Well, we’ve got to the end of May now. 📍Q7 We’re hoping to have someone start by the **28th** of June, in time for the summer. MAN: I’m available from the 10th of June, so that’s fine. And who should I talk to about the job?

📍 Location in Audio Script: "So the roadway at the **entry to Thomas Street from Days Road** will be painted red."

🔹 Analysis of the Answer: The location at the intersection of **Thomas Street and Days Road** (the entry to Thomas Street) is where the road will be painted. This corresponds to **location G**.

🎧 Part 2 Audio Script

Good morning, everyone. I’m **Jenny Jones**, and I’m the head of the **Red Hill** community project. I’m here to tell you about the improvements we’re making to the **Red Hill** suburb. I’ll start with some general information. 📍Q11 People we've heard from are mainly worried about traffic in the area, and, in particular, the increasing speed of cars near schools. They feel that it is only a matter of time before there is an **accident** as a lot of the children walk to the school. So we're trying to do something about that.

📍Q12 Firstly, I’m happy to report that the power company have agreed to move the power lines **underground** at a cost of $800,000. 📍Q13 Well, the **power company** have agreed to **bear the cost of this themselves** after a lot of discussion with the council. As you know, the main road has been a problem, and the council agreed to increase rates to help pay for the upkeep of the roads.

Now, if you look at the map you’ll see where the improvements are being made. 📍Q14 Firstly, we'll plant mature pine trees to provide shelter and shade just to the **right of the supermarket** in Days Road (C). 📍Q15 In order to address the traffic problems, the pavements on the **corner of Carberry and Thomas Street** will be widened (D). 📍Q16 So the roadway at the **entry to Thomas Street from Days Road** will be painted red **(G)**. 📍Q17 A 'keep clear' sign will be erected at the **junction of Evelyn Street and Hill Street** (B). And we’ve also agreed 📍Q18 to install **traffic lights half way down Hill Street** where it crosses Days Road (F).

There have also been a lot of requests for us to take into account the history of the suburb. We’ve come up with a brilliant idea for this. 📍Q19 An artist will incorporate that story into paintings on the **wall of a building on the other side of Hill Street from the supermarket (A)**. 📍Q20 Finally, we've agreed to build a new children's playground which will be at the **other end of Hill Street close to the intersection with Carberry Street (E)**.

🎧 Part 3 Audio Script

**JEANNIE:** Hi Dan. Hi Jenny. Have you managed to sort out all your course materials yet? We still have all the revision to do.

**DAN:** Well, nearly. 📍Q21, 22 It was tough getting all the funding though. I thought I was eligible for a government grant, but I was mistaken. JEANNIE: Oh, that’s a shame. DAN: Yeah. I applied to the local council for a grant, but I was turned down. And I decided to leave the college grants alone for the moment as they are pretty small. So then I asked the boss of the company I used to work for if they would sponsor me, and much to my surprise, he said they'd **make a contribution**. My parents had been saying that as I already had a job, I ought to support myself through college. But in the end they took pity on me, so now I've just about got enough.

**JEANNIE:** What about **college clubs**? Are you enjoying those?

**DAN:** I’m only in the hockey club. I’ve never been very good, but I’d miss it if I stopped. JEANNIE: I’ve decided to give up the choir, actually. I enjoyed singing when I was at school, so I joined a group when I came to college. I don't think the conductor **stretches us enough**, though so I'll **give up** after the next concert. 📍Q23, 24 And I also joined the **debating society**. It's fun, but with all the rehearsing I'm doing, **something has to go**, and I'm afraid that's the one. DAN: I find the tennis club tough, as I'm just not fit enough. JEANNIE: Why don't you stick to the things you're good at?

**DAN:** What about the course itself? How are you finding the **seminars**?

**JEANNIE:** I think they’re quite useful.

**DAN:** 📍Q25 All those people saying clever things that I could never think of – it's quite interesting, but I wonder if **I'm clever enough to be doing this course**.

**JEANNIE:** I know what you mean. But what about the **tutorials**? I find them very good. 📍Q26 She gives me lots of feedback and advice, so I've got much better at **writing essays**. And she's **helping me plan my revision** for the end-of-year exams. DAN: She does that for me too, which is very helpful.

**JEANNIE:** Well, I think we should start planning our revision. Have you got a good method?

**DAN:** Well, I’ve got some good advice from one of the older students. 📍Q27 Firstly, she suggests that you work out your revision **priorities**, based on what's most likely to come up. I put these on a card, and read them through regularly. 📍Q28 She also says you need a **timetable**, to see how you can fit everything in, in the time available. Then keep it in front of you while you're studying. 📍Q29 And, if you break down your revision into small **tasks**, and allocate them to specific days, there's more incentive to tackle them. 📍Q30 And as I revise each topic I write a single **paragraph** about it – then later I can read it through quickly, and it helps fix things in my mind.

🎧 Part 4 Audio Script

**LECTURER:** Good morning. In the last lecture, I talked about the **rock paintings** of the **Aborigines** in the **Kimberley Region** of Australia. Today, I’m going to talk about a different area of Australia, the **Arnhem Land** in the **Northern Territory**, and the amazing paintings there. 📍Q31-36 I’m going to focus on three distinct styles. The first is called the **Dynamic style**, which dates from about 10,000 to 6,000 B.C. The paintings are mainly of human figures, and animals. The figures are **stick-like**, and tend to be painted in miniature. The **Yam style** of painting got its name from the fact that it featured much **curvier figures** that actually resemble the vegetable called a yam, 📍Q32 and this style dates from 4,000 B.C. to 1,500 A.D. The third style is the **Modern style**, which is known as **'x-ray'** because it actually makes a feature of the **internal skeleton** as well as the organs of 📍Q31 animals and humans. The **Modern paintings** are interesting because they include 📍Q33 paintings at the time of the first contact with **European settlers**. Aborigines managed to convey the idea of the settlers' clothing by simply painting the Europeans **without any hands**, which showed that they refused to engage in the trade the Europeans were proposing. 📍Q34 The more recent images tend to be life size or even larger, but the **Dynamic figures** are painted in **miniature**.

The change in the style of paintings and the subject matter reflect a number of things. The change in diet is one of these. The Dynamic paintings feature mainly land animals such as the kangaroo, which they hunted with spears. 📍Q35 In fact, **fish** didn't start to appear in paintings until the **Yam period** along with shells and other **marine images**. 📍Q36 The paintings of the **Yam tradition** also suggest that, during this time, people were eating more of the **vegetables** in their diet, as these feature prominently.

Now, I’m going to look at the **Rainbow Serpent**. 📍Q37 We decided to study the **Rainbow Serpent** paintings to see if we could locate the **animal** that the very first painters based their image on. The **Rainbow Serpent** has a mythical nature, but also a scientific basis. The **Rainbow Serpent** paintings were first found in caves in the **Arnhem Land**. The **Rainbow Serpent** image first appears 10,000 years ago at the end of the **ice age**. 📍Q38 This brought about tremendous change in the environment, with the **sea levels rising** and creeping steadily inland. 📍Q39 This flooded many familiar land features and also caused a great deal of disruption to traditional patterns of life, **hunting in particular**. 📍Q40 Even today, Aborigines see the **Rainbow Serpent** as a symbol of **creation**, which is understandable given the increase in vegetation and the new life forms that featured when the image first appeared.
